Vane, the Gambler, reaches the pilgrims' camp once the Dark Lord has fallen. He sells wares that do not say what they are. A tile on his shelf reads ? Axe or ? Heavy belt, with a price under it, and that is all you know before you pay.
The shelf holds fifteen wares and is new every time you open it. There is always a ring and an amulet, and the rest are kinds of gear that drop at your level.

What you buy is rolled the moment you pay, at your own level give or take three. A gamble is never a plain item. Most come out magic, some come out rare, and now and then one is a unique, when that kind of item has a unique you are high enough for. Further into the game a pull can also land in a better tier of the same kind, an exceptional or an elite one, and the tile says when that can happen. In the demo's levels every pull is normal tier, and the uniques start higher up.
The item drops into a socket under the shelf, its rim pulsing in the colour of its rarity, then goes to your bag. Hover over it to read what you got. If your bag is full, Vane keeps his wares and you keep your gold.
