Roads That Lead Somewhere

October 5, 2026

A Dread Map now has one road, from the pass you arrive through to the pass at the far end. It bends once or twice on the way and never doubles back.

The first version of the generator grew its roads like roots. On 500 test maps the way through ran twice the straight-line distance, with nine turns, two dead ends and usually a loop. The new road runs 1.2 times the straight line with four turns, and the test now fails any map with a dead end or a loop.

Every side road leads to something. The set pieces, a shrine, an orchard, a ruined tower and the rest, sit at the end of short side roads of their own. They go where the map is emptiest, until no open field is far from a road or a set piece, and where there is room they turn their front toward the camera, so you see the door of the watchtower and not its back wall.

How many monsters a map holds now follows how much ground you can walk. A small map and a large one are equally full, about three ordinary monsters for each stretch of walkable ground and an elite for every two or three stretches, plus the boss groups.

Rock outcrops stand inside the maps as hills you walk around. At the far corners of the rock wall, the ground the camera can never show is no longer built, so a map loads faster.

Both passes end at an iron cemetery gate with a torch on each side. The road runs up to it, the gate lights up when you point at it, and a click takes you back to camp.

The see-through circle that follows you now cuts building walls as well as trees and roofs, so you can see yourself inside the watchtower.

A map opened after you restart the game no longer gives you the same road as the first map you opened the last time.
