A Death You Can Read

August 29, 2026

A run's worst moment is the one you don't understand. You die, and your answer to what just killed me? is a shrug. This round was a sweep across the whole game aimed at that shrug. It was about making the information you need legible exactly when you need it, starting with the death itself.

The Fallen ledger records the last twenty things that happened to your health and shows them to you when you go down: each blow named by what dealt it, how much it hit for, and what your health was left at afterward. A gas cloud reads as a gas cloud rather than a mystery tick. A damage-over-time credits the skill that seeded it, so the blame doesn't land on the last thing you touched. Every entry is also coloured by the rank of its source, from an ordinary skeleton to an orange elite to a red boss. You can see at a glance whether one big thing killed you or a hundred small ones did, and gear against the threat you actually faced instead of the one you remember.

A stack of smaller things got clearer alongside it. Your resource bar is now tinted to your class, so Wrath and Malice never get confused at a glance. Item rarity finally reads consistently. A unique glows the same burnt-orange in your bag, the stash, the vendor, and its tooltip, instead of changing colour depending on where you looked at it. Character select names your actual class. Runes gained an explicit Unlock button, a click-to-expand for their full text so nothing overflows, and a locked rune now fully greys out so "can't use this yet" is obvious. Completed quests pulse green before they fade from the tracker, and the minimap's enemy radar got its blips back.

A few fixes went in as well, because readability includes not lying to you with a broken mechanic: two-handed casters no longer silently fail to cast, summoned minions are actually visible (a shader strip that had left some of them ghostly is fixed), and a healing skill that could lock you out of taking damage credit got sorted. Dreadmark is the same game it was. You can see more of it now, because a game this dark should still be readable in the dark.
